The Wasserstelzen school building, constructed in 1963, was originally designed for two grade levels but had to be converted into a primary school only following school harmonization. Due to changed pedagogical requirements, such as the introduction of all-day structures and additional classrooms, as well as technical deficiencies (e.g., outdated building systems, insufficient earthquake safety), a complete renovation became necessary. The renovation is to be completed by 2026 and will make the school building fit for modern pedagogical approaches – with contemporary classrooms, improved infrastructure, and sustainable solutions. The project exemplifies the balancing act between heritage protection and forward-looking school design.
