As part of the European high-speed railway network, the two base transversals through the Alps are currently being built at the Lötschberg and Gotthard. The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is approximately 35 km long and runs from Frutigen in the Kandertal to Raron in the Rhone Valley. After its opening in 2007, it forms together with the Simplon Tunnel the first fast north-south connection through the Alps.
