The clients come from all concordat cantons. Since the closed ward built in 1997 has to take on additional tasks, it must meet increased security requirements. These specifications involved a renovation and an expansion. The open and closed wards were connected by a new entrance area. The central office was moved to the upper floor of the extension building, which significantly improved visibility of the facility and thus security.
The MZU has a total of 64 places, of which 30 belong to the closed ward. Criminal male adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 25 are cared for there. The goal of the institution is to enable the admitted offenders "to live independently and legally".
