Oerlikon Tram Depot
The City of Zurich is expanding the Oerlikon tram depot from June 2010 to December 2011.
The reason for the expansion is the Glattalbahn, whose third stage opens in December 2010 and operates 12 kilometers of new track. The trams of the new lines are operated by the VBZ on behalf of the Glattal transport company and maintained in Oerlikon. Seven additional Cobra trams must fit in the tram depot.
The expansion project respects the existing depot, which was built in 1935 according to plans by city architect Hermann Herter and is listed in the inventory of buildings worth protecting. Its flat-roofed skylighted halls are continued in the new building. In the basement of the new building, the contact and information point formerly located here is being reinstated.
