The expansion of the school and sports facility Chilefeld in Dagmersellen includes the project «ZICK ZACK» with a new triple gymnasium as well as a pavilion arranged to the southwest for day-care structures and school administration. The urban design concept integrates the building volumes as a new ensemble into the public space.
Technically, the main building is based on a skeletal structure whose defining feature is a visibly retained wooden supporting structure arranged in a zigzag pattern. The construction is founded on a massive concrete deck above the ground floor, which was realized with hollow bodies in the area of a wide cantilever to reduce weight. A large portion of the timber used comes from regional timber harvesting, while the facade design through the use of polycarbonate elements enables targeted daylight utilization.
