New Construction and Redesign of Bahnhofplatz Süd

With the renovation and redesign of Bahnhofplatz Süd, the winning project from the public competition in 2008 is being implemented. The project "In between" by Winterthur architecture firm Stutz + Bolt + Partner features as its most striking element the new roof structure, in the meantime called "mushroom roof", which provides weather protection from the central platform to Coop City. The impressive steel structure measures 30 x 50 meters and hovers at a height of seven meters. At the base of the roof support, a sales point for Stadtbus will be installed. The roof surface will be covered with glass, while the steel beam structure will be clad with aluminum perforated sheets. Additionally, two additional waiting halls will be built on the Untertor side.
The bus lanes of Stadtbus will be newly concreted, and black asphalt will be installed in the waiting areas and walkways. The new square will be deliberately furnished sparingly to accommodate the steadily increasing pedestrian flows.
