The Hardbrücke, an important north-south connection, shows considerable damage to the load-bearing structure and bridge equipment after 35 years of intensive use. The static and structural deficiencies are partly so severe that immediate measures had to be taken to ensure safe operation. Furthermore, the passive safety of the Hardbrücke does not meet the state of the art, which demonstrates an overall need for action in terms of maintenance. Additionally, sections 0 - 2 had to be prepared for the accommodation of tram loads. The engineering consortium Edy Toscano AG / Flückiger + Bosshard AG (IG Hardbrücke) was entrusted with the planning and site management of the overall maintenance.
