After obtaining their architecture diplomas simultaneously in 1975 from ETH Zurich and working there as assistants, Herzog and de Meuron founded their office in Basel, Rheinschanze 6 in 1978. In addition to this headquarters, they have since established branch offices in London, Munich, Barcelona, San Francisco and Tokyo. Overall, the company employs 330 staff members. De Meuron and Herzog both teach at ETH Zurich and at Harvard University.
