The Swiss Transport Museum (VHS) plans to build a new multi-purpose building with exhibition space and office areas for its own use and third-party tenants at the location of the former rail hall 1 on Haldenstrasse from 1959. This replacement building is necessary because both the existing office building on Lidostrasse and the rail hall are in a state of disrepair and no longer meet current requirements. With the new building, the energy supply of the VHS will also be completely redesigned. A new energy centre for the entire site is to be housed in the basement. The aim is to significantly increase the proportion of renewable energy for heat and cold generation. It is planned to supply drinking water from the main drinking water line, which supplies the city of Lucerne from the Kreuzbuch reservoir, to the energy centre. Energy for heating and cooling the VHS is obtained from the drinking water via plate heat exchangers. Heat pumps are used to raise the recovered energy to a level suitable for heating. Gas heating boilers are provided for redundancy and to cover peak loads.
