In the middle of Liestal's old town stands the Poet and City Museum Liestal, or DISTL for short. Located between the government building and town hall, it forms a meeting point in the old town together with its private partner, the antiquarian bookshop «Poete-Näscht».
The poet museum is based on the significant legacy of German freedom poet of the 1848 Revolution Georg Herwegh and his wife Emma, née Siegmund. This formed the foundation of the newly opened poet museum on the 3rd floor of Liestal town hall in 1946. During the course of the 20th century, the museum's collection was expanded through legacies and objects from the estates of other authors whose biographies have a connection to Liestal and the region.
In its more recent function as a city museum, the museum also manages the picture collection, extensive material on the history of the city of Liestal and the canton of Basel-Landschaft, as well as the weapons and flag collection of the city.
This wealth of collections as well as the density of exhibitions and events in the museum require plenty of space in dedicated rooms.
Therefore, the Poet and City Museum moved in 2001 to the «Bussmannhaus» at Rathausstrasse 30.
