Archaeological Institute and Collection (RAK)

The Archaeological Institute, which is also used as a museum on three floors, no longer meets current standards in terms of energy efficiency and fire safety. In this regard, the lighting and security systems will be completely renovated. Special attention must be paid to monument protection and architectural requirements. The building at Rämistrasse 73 was constructed in 1893/94 by cantonal architect Otto Weber, a student of Gottfried Semper, as an eye clinic for the University Hospital. After the eye clinic found its new location in the current University Hospital, the Archaeological Institute and its collection were housed in the building in 1954. About 30 years later, between 1978 and 1984, the building was completely renovated and extensively remodeled to meet the needs of the Institute and the collection. In addition, comprehensive structural measures were implemented to preserve the building.
