Abbey Library of St. Gallen

To protect one of the world's oldest libraries from temperature fluctuations, humidity and unauthorized access, new windows were installed in the rooms of the Abbey Library of St. Gallen.

The lead-glazed honeycomb panes made of mouth-blown glass were removed, restored and reused on the room side in the new window. They give the windows their original appearance from the inside. The windows, weighing around 120 kilograms, have double glazing. The outer glass was equipped with laminated safety glass with four-ply foil and a solar protection coating. The foils prevent UV rays from entering and simultaneously form part of the burglary protection. With this glass design, the room temperature in the summer months is to be reduced by approximately two degrees. The drawn glass used on the outside, with its slightly wavy appearance, provides the historical look.
