The Gotthard Base Tunnel consists of two 57 km long single-track tubes. These are connected to each other every 325 meters by cross passages. If you also count all connecting and access tunnels as well as shafts, the entire tunnel system measures over 152 km. It connects the north portal in Erstfeld with the south portal in Bodio. With a rock overburden of up to 2300 meters, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is also the deepest railway tunnel ever built in the world.
