The existing Waste-to-Energy Plant (WtE) operated by Energie Wasser Bern has reached the end of its technical lifespan and must be replaced. Renovation or expansion at the current location is not feasible or not possible for operational, financial, urban planning, and ecological reasons. The existing facility will also no longer be able to comply with the limit values of the new Air Pollution Control Ordinance (LRV). There is insufficient space at Warmbächliweg for the necessary expansion of the flue gas cleaning system. Since the Bern WtE plant plays a central role in waste processing for the Bern region according to waste planning by federal and cantonal authorities, a new facility is unavoidable. The WtE Plant Forsthaus West is expected to commence operation in 2012.
With the WtE Plant Forsthaus West, the long-term supply of district heating and electricity is also to be secured.
