The Schaulager is home to the unexhibited works from the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation. It is a new type of space for art. It is neither a museum nor a traditional warehouse. The Schaulager is first and foremost a response to old and new needs for the preservation of works of visual art. It abolishes crate storage and transforms the antechambers of exhibition halls into autonomous institutions independent of museums, with specific qualities and functions. It is a pilot project that enables artworks behind the scenes to have their own life, a life that is not fulfilled in endless waiting for public presentation.
