The new building for the Institutes of Forensic Medicine and Pathology
is located on the grounds of Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen. This area is
characterized by large-scale structures for public use and is distinguished
by its permeable appearance.
As a logical consequence of the basic form, the floor plans
are organized in concentric layers. The square core in the center
of the new building forms the structural framework of the building and
contains, in addition to its load-bearing function, both the vertical
circulation elements such as stairs and technical shafts as well as
auxiliary spaces. Independent of technical supply units, all naturally lit
work areas are located at the facade. The building consists
of two upper floors, one ground floor, and two basement levels.
Through the intersection of the two geometries of the surrounding area
and the different orientation of the upper floors relative to the basement floors,
two courtyards facing away from the hospital are created on the first basement level
on the east and south sides of the building.
