At Zurich Zoo, as part of the 2030 Master Plan, a new elephant park will be created by 2012. The goal of the new elephant park is to provide improved housing for elephants in a landscaped facility that allows visitors insight into the behavior of the animals.
The new home for the elephants extends over an area of more than 10,000 square meters. This corresponds to approximately six times the current facility, providing enough space for up to ten elephants.
The indoor facility with the translucent wooden roof forms the center of the new elephant park.
Besides the elephants, hoofed animals and Asian pigs are also to enrich the park. They share their habitat with the elephants as they do in their homeland in Southeast Asian wilderness.
The elephant park will open its gates in 2013. Its visitors will be able to enjoy unique impressions. For example, from the centrally located visitor lodge, which will offer fantastic views over the indoor and outdoor facilities. Or what about swimming elephants, as the underwater viewing area of the basin will provide?
