The Rothaus on Marktgasse in Winterthur was built in 1907 as one of the first department stores in Switzerland by Max Biedermann. In 1929, the neighboring building was demolished and the department store was expanded, and the beautifully designed natural stone façade has characterised this section of Marktgasse for 100 years. After being used by the consumer cooperative, the building underwent a major renovation together with the two adjacent properties, allowing Möbel Pfister to open the store in 1983. After nearly 40 years, a renovation is unavoidable and the Rothaus is to serve multiple purposes again and will be converted for residential and commercial use.
