- In 2018, after around two years of construction, installation and commissioning time, national grid company Swissgrid was able to put the 380 kV La Bâtiaz substation in Martigny into operation – thanks to EnerTrans Switzerland AG, which was tasked with managing the overall project. With this plant, Swissgrid is ensuring both the connection of the Nant de Drance pumped-storage power station to the power grid and international connection to France. The final step in a few years will be to also connect Emosson SA’s La Bâtiaz power station to the power grid via this plant.

- The La Bâtiaz substation forms the intersection for four 380 kV overhead lines. Two of these lines are fed directly into the substation, while the other two are fed under the Rhône plain via a short cable section. Cable connections are also used to link the generator transformers of the La Bâtiaz power station. The SF6 gas-insulated switchgear is single-phase encapsulated and fitted with a double busbar. The plant is controlled and protected by a state-of-the-art station control system and redundant line and distance protection devices. A powerful diesel generator is in place to ensure that the plant can still be operated safely in the event of an external power supply outage.

- The building is equipped with a ventilation system, has various emergency exits to the outside and also houses the local energy supplier’s transformer station. In addition, the building is suitably dimensioned, while the switchgear hall features an overhead crane to enable quick replacement of any devices that need to be reworked or are damaged. The substation is in both the most severe seismic zone and the highest construction class. Corresponding guidelines had to be considered in the planning and appropriate measures taken during construction.
EnerTrans Switzerland planned, built and commissioned this substation on behalf of Swissgrid as a general contractor. The complex work involved in grid expansion means that the substation has to be commissioned in several stages.
Construction of the switchgear and operations building began in May 2016. Work on the electrics and ventilation installation was carried out in the winter of 2017. The switchgear and control and protection technology was installed between June 2017 and March 2018, followed by the successful setting of the undervoltage in November 2018.
